vata season is here

It is Fall in the Northern Hemisphere and this means cold and flu season is on the way. Fall is Vata season and I liken the season to the leaves falling off my maple tree; dry, brittle, and cold. If your Vata is out of balance you will experience the following symptoms:

  • nervous system activation such as; anxiety, stress, panic attacks, increased worry

  • dryness of skin, eyes, eczema flares

  • tinnitus, difficulty managing loud noises or wind

  • light sleep

  • feeling spacey

When Vata is in balance you will feel:

  • Creative and full of ideas

  • Highly energetic, desire to dance and exercise

If Vata becomes imbalanced Kapha Dosha can kick in. One of Kapha’s traits is lubrication. An example of this is the Kapha dosha creating mucous in the form of a sinus cold to balance out the dry energy of Vata. Creating balance for our Vata during this season can protect our system from cold, flu, and virus. Ways to balance Vata:

  • Stay Warm: use blankets, warm socks, and stay out of wind and cold weather

  • Stay lubricated: hot mineral baths, abhiyangha or oil massage, oil the nose and ears, ingest oil in the form of buttered coffee and tea

  • Eat warm foods and drink warm beverages (stay away from cold drinks, ice, and astringent foods

  • Use warm spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg

In addition to natural balance, I have put together a supplementation protocol to support our immune system during this time. You can access the protocol here. I also recommend Banyan Botanicals Bronchial Support. This helped my family move through the virus this year and has also helped my patients with allergies and other respiratory issues.

This season can be wonderful for creative flow. Stay balanced and create by a warm fire.
