winter season in ayurveda

I walked outside and the delicious smell of winter hit my nose.  There was fresh snow on the ground.  The air was crisp.  The cold, dry air went into my nostrils.  I could smell the Earth.  I love the beginning of winter.  The fresh snow brings a new beginning to the Earth.

Anytime a season changes, we also experience change in our body’s rhythms.  In Ayurveda, Winter can be thought of as Kapha season.  The cold weather, increased moisture, and the hibernation energy of Winter are Kapha qualities.  However, in Colorado, we also have to look at Vata qualities in Winter.  Colorado (and other states) can be dry and brittle.  The energy of isolation in Winter is also a Vata quality.  Winter has arrived in Colorado.  Our Kapha and Vata qualities can now become imbalanced.  It is important to maintain a healthy Winter routine and manage these imbalances before they become a larger issue.

Diet – Our digestive fire is strongest in the Winter.  Eat warm, cooked, slightly oily, and well-spiced foods.  Drink room temperature or hot beverages.  Eat root vegetables.  Cooked grains and clean legumes (such as lentils) with a scoop of Ghee are perfect for the season.

Lifestyle – Move slowly.  Keep your daily routine predictable.  Wake up and go to bed at the same time each day.  Treat your skin to a warm oil massage at least twice a week.

Exercise – If Vata is out of balance; move slowly.  Stick to walking outside or gentle yoga.  If your Kapha is out of balance you may feel sluggish.  For Kapha imbalance take a hot yoga class or increase the intensity of your workout.

Ayurveda supports an intuitive connection to your body.  Stay connected to your natural rhythms this Winter season.  Take 5 minutes each day to practice mindfulness of the body.  Place your hands on your stomach and heart and check in with your body.  How does your body feel?  What does your body need?
