THE WITNESS WITHIN
Remembering Who You Were Before the World Told You Who to Be
Who am I beneath everything I have experienced?
We carry stories about who we should be. We learn roles that help us belong and identities that can become so familiar we mistake them for who we are.
In The Witness Within, I invite you to explore the awareness beneath those layers—and to reconnect with your values, boundaries, and truth.
An Identity Workbook for Living Your Values, Boundaries & Truth
What if the person you have spent your life trying to become has been quietly present all along?
We inherit stories about who we should be. We learn roles that help us belong, make promises designed to keep us safe, and build identities around achievement, responsibility, relationships, and the expectations of others. Eventually, those identities can become so familiar that we mistake them for who we are.
The Witness Within is a contemplative guide and practical workbook for remembering what exists beneath those accumulated layers.
Drawing from Buddhism, yoga philosophy, Ayurveda, psychology, neuroscience, and decades of spiritual inquiry, Lisa M. Gunshore—also known as Sundara Rishika Devi—invites you to cultivate a relationship with the witness: the quiet awareness capable of observing your thoughts, emotions, stories, and identities without becoming confined by them.
Through intimate reflection, accessible teachings, guided self-inquiry, and grounded living practices, you will explore how to:
• Recognize the difference between awareness and identity
• Understand the roles, beliefs, and protective patterns that shaped you
• Stop asking the world to determine your worth
• Remember the qualities and values that have remained faithful throughout your life
• Communicate without abandoning yourself
• Establish boundaries as acts of care and stewardship
• Create a life that visibly reflects what matters most
This is not a book about transcending your humanity, eliminating every difficult emotion, or manufacturing a more spiritual version of yourself. It is an invitation to meet your life more honestly and inhabit it more completely.
You do not need another identity to perform.
You need a place from which every identity can be witnessed with compassion.
The life you are searching for may not be waiting somewhere in the future. It may already be here—beneath the noise of becoming, patiently waiting for you to return.
Welcome home.
about the book
THE STORY
Who is the one experiencing it all?
Throughout my other books, I explored the stories that shape us, the ongoing relationship of healing, the patterns we come to recognize, and the practice of living with greater awareness.
As I reflected on that journey, another question emerged:
Who am I beneath everything I have experienced?
The Witness Within is a contemplative guide and practical workbook for exploring that question. Through reflection, self-inquiry, and grounded practices, I invite you to notice the roles, beliefs, and identities you’ve carried—and cultivate a relationship with the awareness that can observe them.
This is an invitation to meet your life with honesty and compassion, and to create a life that reflects your values, boundaries, and truth.

Then another question quietly appeared.
It was different from the others because it did not ask me to examine another aspect of my life. Instead, it asked me to look at the one who had been living all of it.
As I reflected on these books, I realized that each one had invited me into a deeper relationship with my experience. They had asked me to understand my story, care for my wounds, recognize my patterns, and embody what I had learned. Yet every one of those questions quietly assumed something I had never stopped to examine.
Who was the one experiencing the story?
Who was becoming aware of the patterns?
Who was practicing healing?
Who was attempting to embody wisdom?
The more I sat with those questions, the more I realized that they were not separate from the work that had come before them. They were the natural continuation of it.

turn towards yourself
A moment to reflect
We move through life carrying many roles: the one who cares for others, the one who achieves, the one who keeps the peace, or the one who holds everything together.
Take a moment to consider:
What role have you become accustomed to carrying?
Notice what arises as you think about it. Without needing to change or release the role, ask yourself:
Who am I when I’m not being asked to fulfill it?
You might write a few words, sit quietly, or simply notice the thoughts and feelings that appear. Let the question be an invitation to observe yourself with curiosity and compassion.
FROM REFLECTION INTO PRACTICE
What does it mean to live as the witness?
We can begin by noticing the roles, thoughts, and stories that move through our lives. With practice, we can also cultivate a relationship with the awareness that observes them.
An invitation to Becoming the Witness
Becoming the Witness: Channeling the Self through Vedic Wisdom is a four-week course rooted in Vedic philosophy and the teachings of the Maharishis.
Through meditation, mantra, sacred texts, and reflective inquiry, you’ll explore the witness—Purusha, the eternal Self in Sankhya philosophy—and practice bringing greater presence into everyday life.
The course offers a way to deepen the questions explored in The Witness Within through guided study and embodied practice.
